Do not remove the old vanity and assume the replacement will fit. Measure the new vanity’s width, depth, countertop height, sink location, and drawer clearance. Compare those measurements with the existing water supply lines, drain pipe, outlet locations, baseboard trim, and door swing.
The wall behind an old vanity often reveals issues that were hidden for years. Look for stained drywall, soft flooring, loose shutoff valves, corrosion on supply lines, or signs of a previous drain leak. Install the Top, Sink, Faucet, and Drain
Some vanities arrive with the top and sink already attached. Others require the countertop, undermount sink, faucet, and drain to be installed separately. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific materials. Natural stone, cultured marble, quartz, and laminate tops each have different handling and adhesive requirements.
For a separate top, apply the recommended adhesive sparingly along the cabinet’s upper edges, then set the top in place. Check its overhang and level before the adhesive cures. A heavy top may require two people to position safely without damaging walls, flooring, or the vanity cabinet.
Install the faucet and drain assembly before reconnecting the trap whenever possible. It is much easier to tighten hardware while the sink is accessible from above and below. Use plumber’s putty only where the fixture manufacturer allows it. Some finishes and sink materials call for silicone instead.
Connect the drain tailpiece to the P-trap without cross-threading fittings or overtightening plastic parts. The trap should align naturally with the wall drain. If it does not, do not force it into place. A poorly aligned drain can leak, crack, or retain water improperly. An extension tube or a different trap configuration may be needed.
Reconnect the hot and cold supply lines, making sure hot goes to hot and cold goes to cold. Hand-tighten first, then tighten only as needed with a wrench. Over-tightening supply connections can damage washers and fittings.
Test for Leaks Before You Seal the Edges

Once everything is dry and operating correctly, apply a neat bead of bathroom-rated silicone where the backsplash or countertop meets the wall. If the vanity sits against a wall, a small caulk line along the side edge can create a finished appearance, but avoid sealing areas that may need future access unless the installation calls for it.
